Owning and running a silo will often mean that you probably are already running a successful manufacturing plant. The last thing you want is to have a blockages in the silo outlet.

Lets dig in and have a look at the little known trick that can do to ensure your product keeps flowing when the less informed will be blocked up.

First things first lets look at some silos

Usually there will be at least 7 aeration nozzles on a silo cone to provide adequate aeration to the product during discharge. If you feel your discharge is a bit intermittent you can always add in extra nozzles - see here for Silo Aeration Nozzles and here for the correct layout for the best flow.

If you are getting hardening of your product whether if be cement or lime or any other product then the first thing to check is the seal around the entry into the silo steel. A small leak can quickly create a nightmare for your company.

While cement or other bulk products are being blown into the silo a positive pressure is being created which is not normally present during normal operation, this will really be the true test for a silo.....how air tight is it. If there is even the slightest hole, leak or flow of air then the cement being blown into the silo will follow this path. The path which silo manufacturers do not talk about is simple and easy to safeguard - the airflow lines!
